Dubrovnik – the Pearl of Adriatic – is especially
known from its beautiful heart, the Old City. Old City of Dubrovnik is also one
the Croatian UNESCO World Heritage Sites and its one of my favorite cities in
Europe. I have visited here couple of times and it can be really touristy
during summertime, but there is just something truly especial in this city
which makes me miss back there. There are only around 43.000 locals living in
the city – and most of them outside the old city as it has come really
expensive during the last 15 years due all the time growing amount of tourists.

The main entry
to the old city is Pile Gate |
|
The main
street of old city can get crowded… |
|
…and if it
gets too crowded just go wandering around the side streets |
|
But be
careful - after the rain the streets and stairs can be really slippery |
Dubrovnik – once called Ragusa – was the capital of the
maritime Republic of Ragusa over 400 years until the city was manned by
Napoleon’s men. The city has been partly destroyed twice during its lifetime:
there was destroying earthquake in 1667 which killed 5.000 habitants of the
city, and in October 1991, after Slovenia and Croatia declared their independence
from Yugoslavia, city was attacked by Yugoslavian army. Siege of Dubrovnik lasted
7 months. After war was over the old city was widely reconstructed during years
1995 – 1999. But you can still see the scars of Yugoslavian war all over the
city…
