U.S. Route 1 is the highway which runs through USA
from North to South in east coast USA. It starts in Maine at Canadian border
and it ends up in Florida, Key West. The whole route is 3.813 kilometers long
and during our stay in Florida we drove the last and maybe the most famous part
of it from Miami to Key West. The last 181 kilometers from the Route 1 is also
known as Overseas Highway. It’s going through the islands of the Florida Keys
and big part of it is build overseas. Before 1935 Key West was reachable by train
and by state road and mobile ferry combination, but railway was destroyed in
year 1935 hurricane. Hurricane killed also over 200 WWI veterans who were working
in the area and building new bridges to extend the state road connection
further to islands. After the hurricane state of Florida started building
Overseas Highway to replace the railway connection and it was opened to traffic
on 29th of March 1938. Today Overseas Highway is following original
route only partly as there were some significant improvements made to highway
during WWII as well as during 1980s.
The 3,5 hour drive from Miami to Key West is full of small
islands and their villages, long bridges, beautiful sea views and landscapes,
nice beaches and picnic tables. So take your time and something to eat with you
and stop many times to enjoy the views during your drive. We drove to Key West
on one afternoon and back to Miami next evening. Unfortunately the weather was
quite windy and cloudy during our drive so we didn’t see the best side of
Overseas Highway and we also missed the sunset, but there would have been lot
of amazing places to watch it.
