THEME OF APRIL: TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY IN DACHAU CONCENTRATION CAMP

Dachau Concentration Camp in Bavaria, Germany

In April we continue our photography travel in Free State of Bavaria and we visit the place which is playing important role in its sad Nazi history, Dachau Concentration camp. This place plays such an important role in Bavaria’s history that if you travel in the area without visiting there, you miss the big part of it. Locals – and whole world - have been hugely impacted by this place. This is the place which have been splitting local people and families into two in history – basically all local families have been playing the role in one of the two sides, many of them against their own will or just by selecting their side as a way to survive.

Today Dachau Concentration Camp is estimated to be visited by around 800.000 people per year. Although this part of German history is not the subject which you can easily discuss with the locals, many of the visitors are actually Germans. Visit to Concentration Camp is included to schools’ programs, so you can see lot of local students visiting the site. Visiting the Dachau is free, but if you want to rent an audio guide or visit the place with the tour guide, you need to pay a small fee. I was renting the audio guide and exploring place with my own pace. This is not the easy place to visit during your holiday as horrible things have happened here and visit here is far from fun experience. It leaves you speechless and your mind full of thoughts. For me one day wasn’t enough for exploring this place as there is so much information available and you most probably will be both mentally and physically exhausted after the visit. So might be that I will still return to this place one day. But during my short visit I learned anyway a lot from our sad world history and I also feel that I understand Germans and Bavarians better after visiting this place.

Dachau Concentration Camp and its Visitor Center

Start your visit from the visitor center and I would recommend you to rent the audio guide from there – that way you can explore the place in your own pace
